Citing three current and former Facebook employees, a New York Times report says, "The social network has quietly developed software to suppress posts from appearing in people’s news feeds in specific geographic areas."

Facebook won't suppress the feeds directly. Instead, Facebook would offer the software to a third party, a Chinese company, to monitor posts and stories that gain popularity as users share them across the network. The third party partner would have full control to decide whether those posts should show up in users' feeds, according to the Times.

In March this year, Mark Zuckerberg met China's propaganda tsar Liu Yunshan who said that he hoped Facebook could strengthen exchanges and improve mutual understanding with China's internet companies, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Companies like Google and Twitter have been blocked in China since years. Hence, as there is no indication that Facebook has offered the software to the authorities in China, this software may never see the light of day.

However, if Facebook's plan works, the company will definitely celebrate China's 1.4 billion population.
