The forum has pointed out that the technology would give a distinct advantage for e-commerce applications, a potential high growth area for Indian business. In a release, the forum said ATM was a core technology that allowed service providers, network operators and corporates build high bandwidth, secure, reliable and manageable networks that empower e-business. Announcing this at Hyderabad, ATM Forum spokesperson Rajesh Rathod, Regional Chair, Asia Pacific

region, said that a growing number of corporates who increasingly depend on the IT network for mission critical applications stand to benefit by ATM.

While acknowledging the fact that neither pure Internet Protocol, nor a pure ATM network can deliver the guaranteed quality of service, the Forum administers the deployment of ATM core networks and IP access layers. These ATM-enabled IP networks deliver the best of IP with the reliability, guaranteed performance and multi-service capability of ATM. Today's ATM networks, using fibre optic, can

offer a bandwidth up to several ten thousand Mbps, making management of data, voice and video traffic on the network an inherent capacity.

Delivering the keynote address at The ATM Forum seminar in Hyderabad, Mr R. Chandrashekar, Secretary to Government, Dept. of Information Technology, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, said, ATM had moved from being a concept to reality. He added that the Andhra Pradesh government would evaluate this technology when extending the Andhra Pradesh State Wide Area Network (APSWAN) to areas beyond District

Headquarters.
