Asian handset mkt to grow by 2012

BANGALORE, INDIA: According to market research firm, ABI Research, the Asian handset market will reach 62.4 crore by the end of 2012 as the segment is estimated to have a 6.9 per cent y-o-y growth.

The major growth areas for the Asian handset market will be developed markets like Korea and Japan and emerging markets like India, China and Indonesia. As per ABI’s estimates, 20.3 crore handsets will be sold in India in 2012 for an 11.2 per cent growth y-o-y; while Indonesia should notch up 5.7 crore handsets, and 16 per cent growth in the same time-frame.

Nokia has 37 per cent market share in India and in Indonesia its market share is recorded at 21 per cent in 2011. In India brands like Samsung, G'Five, Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice are chasing to grasp the market. On the other hand, in Indonesia, market players like Samsung, RIM, Nexian, HT Mobile and Cross are making inroads.

Mobile handset players are banking more on 4G as it is taking a strong hold in various markets. 4G technology has already leading in Japanese and Korean market. In Korea, operators LG U+, SK Telecom, and KT commenced commercial services in early 2012. Along with smartphones, the operators are also selling LTE dongles and LTE enabled tablets.

Consumers in Korea are piling into stores to sign up for LTE subscription plans.
