The report states that "Overall, the data warehouse market has never been more exciting from a technology point of view" and alludes to the rapid, explosive growth of data volumes and varieties - which present new challenges and require new big data strategies.

"Our research shows that Teradata continues to hold the strongest overall technology position in 2014 - at a time when big data analytics platforms must meet new and extreme user demands and complex data integration challenges," said Andy Hayler, CEO and co-founder of The Information Difference. "The Teradata Unified Data Architecture™ with its Discovery analytics and dramatic new intelligent memory capabilities continue to keep the solid user base references strong and happy."

In its commentary on platforms to manage big data, the report concluded that "Hadoop will evolve as a largely complementary offering to traditional data warehouses ... and is expected to appear alongside, rather than as a replacement for, data warehouses in most corporate architectures." This statement aligns with Teradata's advocated position and design with regard to big data analytics, a point of view underscored in a blog by Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs.

Teradata's unified data architecture includes powerful new functionality that quickly ingests and preprocesses multi-structured data, which accelerates the delivery of business insight. For instance, the Teradata Aster SNAP Framework ™ integrates and optimizes the execution of queries across multiple analytical capabilities - like graph, MapReduce and statistics.

This delivers an order of magnitude improvement in ease-of-use, analytic power, and performance - while leveraging SQL, a language that many data-oriented professionals already understand and use. This is one of many attractive benefits of the Teradata UDA.

Teradata also introduced Intelligent Memory into the Data Warehousing arena. Teradata Intelligent Memory™ creates the industry's first extended memory space beyond cache that significantly increases query performance and enables organizations to leverage in-memory technologies with big, diverse data.

The research firm's technology dimension position is derived from a weighted set of scores based on four factors: customer satisfaction as measured by a survey of reference customers, analyst impressions of the technology, maturity of the technology and breadth of technology in terms of coverage in the context of the Information Difference functionality model. As compared with its main competitors, Teradata customers were among the most satisfied based on a survey of reference customers.

"Our customers understand that Teradata focuses on delivering sustainable value. Maintaining this focus differentiates our innovation and creates performance, scalability, functionality and cost advantages for our solutions," said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. "The new Information Difference report is yet another confirmation of our formula for continuing success - giving our customers a smart competitive edge - in collaboration with our partners, professional services and customer service offerings."
