Intel's six-core or "sexa-core" part is called Gulftown and is believed to be aimed at a release during the first half of 2010, InternetNews.com reported today. But AMD might beat its larger rival to the punch with its own sexa-core chip, called "Thuban", it added.

AMD had recently shipped a lower-power version of its Opteron server chip as it tries to expand its offerings for Web hosting companies.

The new chip is believed to be a repackaging of the sexa-core Opteron known as "Istanbul", the report said.

The name "Thuban" comes from a star in the constellation Draconis, or Dragon. Though an AMD spokesman declined to address the Thuban rumor directly, he said the chipmaker has plans to update its public product roadmap “a little later this year”, according to InternetNews.com.
