Amazon pumps in Rs 100cr in its Indian wholesale business

Amazon Wholesale, the business-to-business wholesale marketplace that operates amazonbusiness.in received an investment of Rs 100 crore last December from Amazon Corporate Holdings Singapore and Amazon.com, Mauritius, according to documents filed with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

As first reported by Economic Times, Amazon Wholesale also received similar capital infusions in September (Rs 159.9 crore) and June (Rs 115 crore) last year.

Amazon wholesale business arm was set up way back in 2013 when Amazon began its Indian journey. It owns and runs AmazonBusiness, which currently serves small and medium-sized business (SMBs) in categories such as office supplies, stationery, housekeeping supplies, kitchen, health, personal care, food, and beverages.

A registered member on the platform can purchase items including business supplies and products for resale, at wholesale prices and in bulk quantities across categories according to information available on its platform. Currently, Amazonbusiness.in is operational in 13 states across the country.  The unit also works as the marketing and distribution partner for smartphone brands such as Coolpad, Huawei, Honor, OnePlus and Xolo, which do not have offline distribution channels.

Amazon's big investment comes on the heels of Flipkart raising a whopping $1.4 billion from Tencent, eBay and Microsoft.

Last week, Amazon India’s payments portal Amazon Pay received funding worth Rs 67 crore ($10.46 million).
