PARIS, FRANCE: Alcatel-Lucent and G-Mobile are set to deploy small cell base stations to improve 3G mobile broadband coverage in densely populated areas like malls and stadiums in the city of Ulaanbaatar. G-Mobile is one of Mongolia's leading service providers.

Ulaanbaatar, home to approximately 45 percent of the population, will be the location of an initial deployment to be followed by an expansion in 2014, which will cover the greater Ulaanbaatar area, as well as other major cities in Mongolia.

As Alcatel-Lucent's small cells are small and compact, they can be placed inconspicuously in internal and external environments, offering a lower cost-per-bit solution for adding 3G mobile broadband coverage and capacity compared to traditional macro cells, repeaters, or distributed antenna systems (DAS).

Small cells improve the quality of mobile coverage- both for voice and high speed data access- by making more effective use of available wireless spectrum. They are also a key element in The Shift Plan, Alcatel-Lucent's industrial strategy to reposition the company as a specialist vendor of IP Networking and Ultra-Broadband Access.

Daniel Rosie, country senior officer of Mongolia for Alcatel-Lucent, said: "This small cell solution is the very first of its kind in the Mongolian telecom sector. By adding capacity and coverage exactly where it is needed Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio small cell technology has opened up the possibilities for expanding our business relationship with G-Mobile."
