NEW DELHI: AirTel has licensed Phone.com's WAP platform, UP.Link, to introduce personalized Internet services in the country. Phone.com's Professional Services Group will assist AirTel in integrating the UP.Link server software into its network.

The WAP services that AirTel will announce will be an integrated end-to-end solution with firewalls incorporated. This platform will act as a content aggregator in providing access to WAP-based information as well as for carrying mobile Internet traffic. In addition to providing access to the Internet, AirTel will develop a hub for accessing a range of mobile Internet services. These would contain a range of services on the lines of news-based services, e-commerce, security, billing, marketing, regular Internet services, wireless data transmission, etc. The revenue streams would be generated from services such as e-commerce hosting, advertising, service charges, access charges and airtime tariffs.

Mobile phone users can access the services using mobile phones equipped with a WAP browser such as Phone.com's UP.Browser microbrowser.
