Infosys Technologies has been hired by aircraft maker, Airbus Industries, for
designing of wings. Infosys’ avionics group has already started working on the
project and expects to do more for the aircraft maker. Infosys has been focusing
on avionics domain as a high priority area.
The avionics group is part of the Infosys’ engineering services consulting
practice (ESCP) group. The main focus of the avionics group is to ensure that
the group is knowledgeable in terms of both software and hardware so as to
provide clients with the following capabilities: mission computers, flight
control and management systems, navigation systems and air traffic management.
Software application development, maintenance and re-engineering are some of
the traditional and well-known services that Infosys offers. However,
engineering services is a relatively unknown area and within focus for most
software exporters in India. The range of services which ESCP offers stretches
from product design and engineering analysis to embedded systems, from product
data management (PDM — where design teams in different locations can
collaborate) to e-Engineering.
The ESCP group was set up recently to target global leaders in the avionics
business. It comprises of professionals and senior industry consultants. The
ESCP builds life critical embedded software for some of the world’s leaders in
avionics, automotive, defence systems and medical electronics. The challenge
lies in providing predictable, affordable, maintainable, high integrity
software. Software has become a driving element in development and modernization
of civil and military avionics systems and thus software provided by Infosys
needs to safe and reliable.
Two of the most important features that separate life critical software from
other software are reliability and predictability. Infosys adopts techniques
such as failure modes and effects analysis to improve reliability of the
software products. Predictability is the ability of the software to behave in a
predictable manner. In building such life critical software, Infosys has enabled
its clients to reduce the total cost of ownership through reduction in time to
market with the help of its technical and managerial capabilities.
ESCP has a team strength of around 500 and is one of the fastest growing arm
of Infosys. ESCP is a key differentiator in Infosys` service offerings. It works
on high-end, technical and critical solutions, which would help Enterprise in
streamlining their manufacturing and business process. 200 of the Fortune 500
companies are in some kind of product development but the size of the market is
not known. Designers, analysts and test engineers are ESCP target staffers.
The engineering service contributed 2.9 per cent (1.6 per cent during the
same period last year) of the revenues during the quarter ended December 2001.
ESCP focuses on satisfying the immediate needs of clients in markets such as
automotive, aerospace and high-tech manufacturing by building a team of
individuals in the field of cross-platform integration.
