Warns World Back-Up Day, an initiative started by a group of users at Reddit to spread awareness and to get those who have never backed-up data to start.

Now, if you think why should someone back-up data when your hard drive is doing it for you, the following stat should give you an idea as to why.

"Hard drives do break. The hard drive is the component that has the highest likelihood of breaking unexpectedly."

And, unlike processors which can be restored be replacing, "When a hard drive fails, if the data isn't backed-up, it's gone. And it's not a question of if your hard drive will fail, it's when."

Not just this, hard drives are also prone to viruses, malware and moreover, accidental deletion can all damage the data on a hard drive. Although recoverable, why wait for it to struck.

Having said that it doesn't mean a data loss caused due to the hard drive crash is not recoverable. In fact, it is by all means.

However, you should be "willing to spend an exorbitant amount of money on data recovery", adds the site.

Online backup Storing your files with an online storage provider is much easier than it sounds, and is possibly the most reliable way keeping your files safe. Services like Dropbox or SpiderOak Backup and Sync are simple to use.

The site suggest that it is always advisable to back-up files regularly and in at least two separate places, to be on the safer side.
