CALIFORNIA, USA: Service provider edge router market is projected to grow 56 per cent over the next five years as telecom operators upgrade networks to accommodate the rapid growth of Internet traffic, says Dell’Oro Group.
One particular market driver that is highlighted in the report is the increasing use of routers for mobile backhaul - the transportation of mobile traffic from cell sites to switching centres. Also Read: Web traffic to touch zettabyte threshold by 2015
“Routers are the best technology for aggregating, transporting, and parsing large volumes of traffic, and we expect network operators to increasingly upgrade backhaul networks with routers to support super-fast mobile services based on LTE and HSPA+ technologies,” said Shin Umeda, vice president, Routers research, Dell’Oro Group. “North America has been the hot market for mobile backhaul over the past 18 months, however, we expect the trend to expand globally over the next five years,” added Umeda.
