BANGALORE, INDIA: A lot of questions have been raised about Google Instant's effect on SEO and user behaviour. Let's see what does Vinay Goel, head of products, Google India, has to say about it. Excerpts:
CIOL: Will Google Instant kill SEO? Why not?
Vinay Goel: At any given point, we use over 200 signals to rank our search results and as with all changes to search, there will always be people who work to optimize their pages to fit the Google experience.
There are no ranking changes with this enhancement and as always we continue to focus on showing users high-quality, relevant queries and search results. Also Read: Google Instant Blacklist: What is it?
CIOL: Are you trying to change the user behaviour of Google Search or Internet users? Why do you want to challenge the Internet users' thought process?
VG: At Google, our focus is to help users find information quickly and easily. Today’s change makes search fast, predictive and easier to use. We estimate that Instant saves the average person between 2-5 seconds every time they search.
Autocomplete is a feature of Google search that offers predicted searches to help you more quickly find what you’re looking for.
For example, start to type 'new y' and Google will offer search word suggestions starting with 'new york' beneath the box. Autocomplete has become an important part of Google search, helping users more quickly formulate their queries. Also Read: What went behind Google Instant
With Instant, we’re giving users a new choice to have Google Instant on or off. It’s undesirable for us to maintain many different versions of Google with slightly different features and options. As Autocomplete quality has improved, we felt it was appropriate to have it always on for all of our users.
CIOL: Are you in a way promoting ads over such quick caches results?
VG: This will not change the way ads are served. We will serve the same ads on the predicted full query as if the user typed the entire query. The predicted query is displayed in the search box as if the user typed the entire query.
