BANGALORE, INDIA: Vinay Goel, head of products, Google India, talks about Google Instant service launched a few weeks back. Excerpts:
CIOL: What is Google Instant?
Vinay Goel: Google Instant is a new search interface and infrastructure enhancement that is fast and predictive, making search easier by showing you relevant search results instantly on the homepage as you type a query. Also Read: Instant lighter than video streaming, gaming portals
We estimate using Instant saves between 2-5 seconds on typical searches because you don’t have to finish typing or click the search button.
With Instant, we have introduced a couple of new features that include dynamically displayed results right on the homepage so you can quickly review and find your search result. Predictive text saves time by guessing your search so you don’t have to finish typing.
Moreover, scroll to search enables you to manually scroll through a list of 'Autocomplete' predictions with the arrow keys and instantly see results for each. Also Read: What went behind Google Instant
Google Instant is rolled-out to users on Google domains in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Russia.
CIOL: What is that one thing that you are currently working upon to improve the available version of Instant?
VG: Users on domains other than Google.com can access Google Instant if they are signed in to a Google Account. We will continue to add new domains and languages over the next several months.
Google Instant puts a tremendous strain on our infrastructure so we need to roll out it gradually to additional users and markets. We’re starting with signed-in users in some markets so we can get feedback from a portion of our user base. Also Read: Google Instant Blacklist: What is it?
We could have chosen to release it to, say, a random 20 percent of users in a number of markets, but then users wouldn’t necessarily have the option to try Instant. (*Unsatisfied users can turn off the feature).
