DoT selects Telcordia, Syniverse as MNP providers

Department of Telecommunications has selected Telcordia and Syniverse Technologies to provide solutions for implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) in the country.

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had selected two global majors — Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bell Communications) and Syniverse Technologies — to provide solutions for implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) in the country.

MNP, a technology that enables mobile phone users to retain their existing numbers when shifting from one mobile network operator to another

DoT had divided the country into two geographic zones for number portability implementation with 11 circles coming under each area. Zone 1 will cover the northern and western regions of the country, while Zone 2 will include the south and east.

Syniverse was awarded a letter of intent to provide India’s telecommunications operators with number portability clearing house and centralized database solutions for the next 10 years. Syniverse was selected to receive the license for Zone 1, which includesd the service areas of Delhi, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat and seven others.
