NEW DELHI, INDIA: Tata Tele, one of India's CDMA providers, recently announced that it is gearing up to venture in GSM world.

The limited allocation of CDMA spectrum has led the company to foray into GSM domain. Both Reliance and Tata have applied for dual technology licenses in 2007, while former has already launched its GSM services. throughout the country.

Tata Tele, which pioneered CDMA 3G1x technology in India, has already established a 3G ready telecom infrastructure to offer GSM services to the customers. The company partnered with Motorola, Lucent and ECI telecom to put in place the massive telecom infrastructure throughout the country.

The company presently has 28 million subscribers and is present in 5000 towns of India. After acquiring the GSM licenses, the company is set to add GSM telephony to its bouquet of services.

GSM and CDMA are competing platforms, but now major CDMA operators are vying out for dual licenses to operate both the services.

Tata Tele is part of the Tata group and has a committed investment of 7.5 billion US dollars in the telecom space and has strong presence all across the value chain.
