SANTA CLARA, USA: Adesto Technologies Inc, the start up company funded by Applied Materials Inc, is reportedly is developing a technology based on a resistiverandom access memory (RRAM)-type scheme called programmable metallization cell (PMC).

RRAM is seen as a potential candidate to replace conventional flash memory at or below the 22-nm process technology node.

According to news sources, Adesto has licensed the PMC technology from Axon Technologies Corp, a Arizona State University spin off.

The Applied funded firm, which is only two years into the semiconductor scene, is likley to sample a next-generation memory line based on PMC within a year. Reports quoting Ishai Naveh, co-founder and vice president of marketing and business development for the company, said that the company looking at popularizing the devices for the embedded and storage-class memory field.

Adesto, which was kicked off two years ago, by executives from AMD, Tower and other firms has received its first round of funding and is soon likely to get one more round.

In a scenario where RRAM is gaining in popularity among future scaled memories owing to their superior intrinsic scaling characteristics compared to the charge-based flash devices, and potentially small cell size, enabling dense crossbar RRAM arrays using vertical diode selecting elements, Adesto's move is seen as significant.
