UK wants to partner India in semiconductor

BANGALORE, INDIA: All praise for the enormous talent and path breaking innovations displayed by India, British Deputy High Commissioner to India said the UK would like to participate with India's semiconductor industry.

“Semiconductor is the key industry which drives sectors like communication, education, healthcare, finance and many more. India has been faring commendably in this space. So, the UK would like to participate with India in semicon space,” said Richard Hyde, British Deputy High Commissioner. He was speaking at ISA Technovation 2010 award ceremony in Bangalore.

He said that India possessed enormous talent that would drive the industry and make the country a tough competitor in the global semiconductor market. Hyde even compared the entertainment industry, one of the main beneficiary chip innovations, to the semiconductor Industry. “The entertainment industry makes profit with less amount of talent, while semiconductor industry makes money by using enormous talent.” he said.

According to a briefing statement from India Semiconductor Association, demand for electronics in Indian market currently stands at $45 billion and it is poised to grow $125 billion by 2014, indicating a tremendous growth for semicon. The association also expects electronics exports to increase from the current $4 billion to $15 billion by 2014 and $80 billion by 2020.

Rakesh Singh, IAS, Additional Secretary, Department of IT, Government of India, said that the government is currently reviewing the recommendations submitted by the task force, which was instituted in August 2007 to look into the industry. The recommendations cover the areas of IT, ITeS, strategic electronics (like nuclear, space, defense), electronics etc.

At the function, ISA office bearers asked the govt representatives to look into the possibility of helping the industry by taking various measures as the semiconductor industry, according to them, will lead the country in global marketplace.
