Linking electric vehicles to smart grid with a new standard

SAN JOSE, USA: Manufacturers of automobiles plan to ratify, by January 2010, the first draft of a standard which will link electric vehicles to the smart grid.

Automakers intend to define, by 2010, a suite of 5 standards, including those describing ways to link electric cars to home networks.

According to Rich Scholer, chairman of the J2293 task force at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), all the carmakers are “in our group” and similar efforts are being done the ISO and IEC. The standards are being developed by the SAE.

The SAE group, which began its work formally in February 2008, now has 160 members. The group says it will conduct simulation-testing and modelling of products based on its specifications once the standards are in place, and then revise the standards, based on what are learnt from the tests.

As a first step, to Rich Scholer said in a statement, the SAE group is expecting an initial vote in January 2010 on a standard, which will define the physical and media access control layers for a network that will connect electric cars and the smart grid. The link will let a car get data about the costs of charging at different times, given traffic on the grid.

The SAE group will also define use cases and messaging protocols for the network.

By the end of 2009, the SAE group expects to define a set of protocols for linking the electric cars’ power line connection to a home network. Such links, Rich Scholer explained, will allow a car to synch its digital music and video content with a home PC or server while it is charging.
