EuP norms on domestic freezers updated

LONDON, UK: EBV, in collaboration with Kopol independent institute, has come out with an update on energy-using products (EuP) Regulations on domestic freezers and refrigerators.

Starting April 27, 2010, only devices which meet the power consumption requirements specified in the EuP Regulations will be allowed to be circulated in the member-countries of the European Union (EU).

And, from July 2010, domestic refrigerators that do not comply with the minimum requirements of the first stage of Regulation (EC) No 643/2009 are likely to be banned from being marketed in Europe.

The Regulation (EC) No 643/2009 – passed as part of implementing the measure listed in the Ecodesign Directive (2005/32/EC) – includes additional stages, which raises, incrementally, the requirements vis-à-vis the energy-efficiency of refrigerators till 2015.

At present, external power supply units, typically sold with electrical and electronic goods, are placed on the market in hug quantities. The European Commission’s Regulation no. 278/2009 specifies new requirements with regard to environment-friendly design of external power-supply units.

A study, commissioned by the European Commission in preparation for the regulations on energy-using products, found that refrigerators are the main consumers of electricity in the European Union.

In 2006, as much as 99 per cent of households in Europe had refrigerators, and 54 per cent of them had freezers. The study revealed that, in 2005, across the European Union, the products under analysis consumed about 122 TWh – which is the same as emissions of 56 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents.
