Solar plans in India get a fillip

BANGALORE, INDIA: The National Solar Mission, envisaged in India, has received a booster dose with the Union government according conditional approval for billions of dollars in proposed investments in this regard.

According to the plan, India would produce 20,000 megawatts of electricity from solar sources. Current solar energy production in India totals about 100 megawatts.

The government has taken the scene seriously indeed that it is set to launch a massive education campaign about the benefits and uses of solar energy. Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy, said that India is among the few countries on earth with up to 300 days of sunshine annually, making solar energy a viable alternative for this power-starved nation.

The country currently boasts of as many as nine solar cell manufacturers and about 20 module manufacturers. However, it still lacks a domestic supplier of polysilicon and other solar materials as well as a wafer manufacturing capacity, it has been pointed out.

The proposals in front of the government are said to be aimed at the export market, according to a position paper released by SEMI India earlier this year. Manufacturers such as Tata BP Solar are targeting the export market, it has been pointed out.

Proposals for setting up manufacturing facilities under a national semiconductor policy unveiled two years ago include investments close to $20 billion for new solar projects.

The Union government while approving such proposals has also said that regional governments would be the main authorities for approving proposed solar energy projects.
