Sharp Micro looks at energy-saving tech

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM: Not prepared to be bogged down by its first loss ever which it reported by the end of March 2009, Sharp Microelectronics has lined up major investment in areas where it expects to prosper.

According to the company, Sharp Micro is focusing more on 'energy saving' technologies such as low power LCDs and LED lighting as well as renewable thin-film solar panels for the coming years.

While concentrating on energy saving tech, it has also decided to take a new look at the way it has been using energy and how to innovate for the future. The Sakai City, which is also the world's first 10th generation LCD factory, is being pointed out as an apt instance of Sharp's low carbon manufacturing philosophy.

Maximilian Huber, President Sharp Microelectronics Europe, has been quoted by EETimes Europe as saying, the company has built complete production systems that avoids the generation of carbon dioxide as much as possible and eliminates water wastage by recycling water used in production.

This apart, in its bid to wipe away the loss-making trend, it has also gone in for a massive rejig by bringing in a new business strategy. The new strategy would focus more on an application specific market approach, the report added.

As per plans, Sharp Micro has begun urging partners to drive innovative products where synergies exist. In fact, working together with global partners is seen as key to Sharps future plans.
