Andhra goes strong in solar power

HYDERABAD, INDIA: The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has issued offer letters to three more companies – one Indian and two American – to set up solar power plants in the 5000 acres solar power farm, at Kadiri in Anantapur district. This is besides the already approved solar project by Titan Energy Systems, said an official on Thursday.

While speaking at an interactive panel discussion, “Rising opportunities for solar/PV in India”, held as precursor to Solarcon India 2009 to be held from November 11 here, B P Acharya, APIIC chairman and managing director, said the three companies will together invest over Rs 3,000 crore.

While US-based Sunborne will be investing Rs 2,000 crore, California-based AES Solar and Hyderabad-based Lanco Solar will be investing about Rs 600 crore each.

Acharya also said there will be a MoU with Fraunhofer Institute signed during Solarcon India 2009 to set up a center in FabCity to help Indian companies and also facilitate better market access. He said BHEL is the new entrant showing interest in FabCity. BHEL will be investing Rs 500 crore, he said.

He also said the draft state policy would be finalized after national solar mission.

Sankar Rao, managing director, Titan Energy Systems, said that in a few years Hyderabad companies only will have 6-7 GW capacity in solar power. He said the cost of Solar PV has come down from $7 to $3.5 per Mw and in another 10 years the cost would be on a par with other sources of energy.

SEMI India president, Sathya Prasad, also said the cost to produce solar power would come down further with the adoption of new technologies.

S S N Prasad, Vice-president, Solar Semiconductors, said Solar / PV target is to achieve grid parity by 2020 in India and there is 700 MW current manufacturing capacity here.
