Company plans to expand into embedded to tap the huge market opportunity that lies ahead in this segment

BANGALORE, INDIA: Embedded software is one of the new growth areas for Symphony Services and is a logical extension of the company's product engineering focus.

Just as product engineering requires specialized expertise and focus, embedded software development requires similar capabilities and organizational DNA.

"Replicating our success from product engineering services for ISVs to embedded is the right growth strategy for Symphony Services. Currently embedded contributes to 20 percent of Symphony's overall portfolio and we expect this to grow significantly in the coming year," says Amitava Roy, president, Symphony Services.

"We plan to expand into embedded to tap the huge market opportunity that lies ahead in this segment. According to ISA-IDC report, the design market in India is valued at $6 billion in 2007, of which, 81 percent share is that of embedded software. The industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 21.7 percent from 2007–2010."

Apart from this, other critical drivers include, Symphony's growing expertise and capabilities in complex end-to-end design, strong talent, experience in Application, Middleware, Platform and Hardware Layers.

Symphony Services provides complete embedded software product development services for clients in communication, semiconductors, automotive, consumer electronics, medical devices and storage.

Verticals such as communications, semiconductors, storage and automotive account for a large share of the embedded business for Symphony. "As we go along, this will evolve into greater share of work in communications, consumer electronics, semiconductors, automotive control systems. We initiated some very interesting work in these areas as well," adds Roy.

Entry into medical electronics
Symphony has also ventured into medical devices area for its clients in the healthcare domain. Symphony has been entrusted with completed embedded software lifecycle development services on some of the clients' current and future products.

The Devices Practice of Symphony Embedded Business Unit focuses on processing, scanning, imaging, monitoring and reporting needs of pharmaceutical companies for medical devices.

For a leading pharmaceutical development company, Symphony team is working on anti-counterfeit technology covering aspects such as barcode scanners and nano particle analyzers, mobile device security applications for authorization and authentication and development of mobile middleware and healthcare applications.

On the Indian market, Roy says that "India is a very cost-sensitive market. Though Indian enterprises are demanding, they want cost effective products and services. Though some are not that tech savvy, they are aiming to get global talent to get the work done."
