CIOL: Can you elaborate a little more on the thermal management side? SS: Well, we can give a lot more performance in the power management segment. However, we have found that our customers want to go into a very intelligent tradeoff between performances, but not at a price of increasing these solutions, which are expensive for that specific market.
So, they want to make sure that there is a good tradeoff of not having to compromise performance at the cost of power. It takes so much more money and effort to cool those devices. It’s all about finding a perfect balance between these vectors. We have to optimize in our platforms to meet the needs of customers.
CIOL: Can you throw some light on Intel’s 32nm chip? SS: Before going into a mass scale of production, we always test the process. For example, will be launching our products based on 45nm chips before the end of this year. We were at a similar stage of that product last January, where we take all the building blocks you require on a product and put it on a test wafer. From that point on, it takes about 18 months to go into production.
We have a functional testing on 32nm and you should expect to see products based on that technology in a little less than two years. We believe this is a significant milestone as we are already ahead by one generation from our closest competitors.
CIOL: 2007 was supposed to be the year of the broadband? This hasn’t happened. What is your take on this? SS: The infrastructure has yet to come up. Take the example of countries like Korea and China. They used to be in the same mold as India. So, we are predicting the trends in India based on what has already happened in those countries. On the other hand, a lot of factors are responsible for the slow growth of broadband in India. These may be technology, economy or regulation related.
