Qualcomm unveils 5.3-inch non-volatile display

LONDON, UK: Qualcomm Corporation, based in San Diego, California, the United States, has unveiled its 5.3-inch, full-color, non-volatile MEMS-based display.

The company says it will bring out, in the fall of 2010, a slightly larger version of this, having a 5.7-inch diagonal size and which will find its place in an e-reader product. The will display feature 1,024 by 768 pixel resolution, with about 220 pixels per inch.

Cheryl Goodman, director of marketing, Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, said at a Press Day held in London that the company has a brand partner for the e-reader space, which would be announced in the first quarter of 2010.

Goodman said the Mirasol technology – which Qualcomm Corporation bought in 2004 – does not need a back-light; it is reflective, by making use of ambient light.

The Mirasol technology, based on an MEMS structure, creates an interferometric modulation in combination with thin film optics. Since the colour display is bi-stable and thin, power is consumed only when the status of display is changed. This, according to Cheryl Goodman, is advantageous to products of the likes of e-reader, since a lot of savings in power is possible.

The Mirasol technology, Cheryl Goodman said, also can run video at 30-frame per second.

Already, this technology is being used by some mobile-phone products, but only as small and monochrome displays.
