LONDON: The coming decade is expected to see the e-paper display market to grow by leaps and bounds. According to a research report, the e-paper display mart is set to grow with a compound annual growth rate of 41 percent for revenues and 64 percent for units over the next decade.

The DisplaySearch research report also says that the total e-paper display market will touch 22 million units and clock revenues to the tune of $431 million in 2009. Currently finding use in e-books, e-newspapers, mobile phones, electronic shelf labels, in clothes and other wearable items, the e-paper displays in fact are finding more deployment and will most probably comprise 36 million units in 2010 and be worth $600 million, it added.

With almost all e-book devices making use of E Ink’s electrophoretic display technology, e-book displays currently account for the majority of e-paper revenues. More and more electrophoretic display suppliers such as SiPix and Bridgestone have announced that they will also commercialize e-book displays very soon.

The DisplaySearch research paper has also pointed out that e-paper displays are turning favorites among consumers owing to their capability toward low power consumption and ease of reading. Besides, the research report noted, "e-paper displays are green because they reduce paper consumption, and electronic shelf labels can save time and labor costs by enabling dynamic pricing in stores."

It has also been foreseen that MEMS display technology is likely to take a leap from small size mobile phone displays to color and medium size e-book displays over the next few years. DisplaySearch has also found that electrochromic stand the chance of becoming the leading technology in terms of unit volume for e-paper displays by year 2013.
