BANGALORE, INDIA: Students of Mechanical Engg. Department, RV College of Engineering, Bangalore, have designed and built a highly fuel efficient car, which addresses the issues of oil crisis, environmental pollution and need for green technologies.

The 'Garuda', the RVCE Supermileage Super Fuel Efficient Car, will be unveiled on August 2 at the RV College of Engineering campus in Bangalore.

This is the first step toward an eventual participation in "SAE Supermileage International Competition, USA" and "Shell Eco-Marathon, UK".

Project significance and social relevance
The project addresses serious issues such as energy conservation and emissions reduction. Here's what the College aims to achieve:

* We believe that the project can help greatly improve awareness and spread the message that advancement in technology represents the solution to these issues.
* Our endeavour has the potential to fire the imagination of people in India regarding issues such as rising fuel prices, global warming etc.
* Furthermore, our Project will showcase the talents and abilities of Indian students to execute the complex R&D and fabrication work associated with building such a vehicle.

This is indeed a very socially relevant and technologically challenging undertaking by the youth of India.

Nishant Sarawgi, Team Leader, Project Garuda-RVCE Supermileage, RV College of Engineering, says the team received tremendous help from companies like Tantra Infosolutions Pvt Ltd, CD Adapco, Chameleon Motors, and from the college itself.

Earlier, students of the RV College of Engineering, Bangalore had unveiled Chimera, the prototype of India's first plug-in hybrid car for city roads. This was a unique collaborative effort between University and Industry to facilitate experiential education leading to innovation. The project was undertaken by 11 engineering students, supported by companies such as REVA, National Instruments and Robert Bosch.

The project code named 'Chimera' involved the development of an energy efficient Hybrid Electric Vehicle based on the REVA electric vehicle platform. National Instruments (NI) supported the students of RV College of Engineering, Bangalore, with virtual instrumentation software, hardware and technical training for design and testing of the project.
