Prime View Delta AUO to launch color e-paper

TAIPEI, TAIWAN: Prime View International (PVI), Delta Electronics, and AU Optronics (AUO) have said they are planning to introduce color e-paper.

This announcement was made at a symposium on Flexible Display and Electronics Technology, organized by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan. However, the three companies said they are wary of the market acceptance of color e-paper.

C T Liu, senior vice-president of AU Optronics and chairman of SiPix, said the market share of color and flexible e-paper is likely to remain low in 2010. He explained that, though many companies will introduce color e-book readers, the acceptance level is bound to be low since product performance has to be improved further.

Addressing the symposium, Liu asked companies based in Taiwan stress more on developing applications. Taiwan-based firms, he added, are already doing well in the areas of content services and ODM, but the firms require more creativity in order to develop new user interface (UI) and applications. Liu said AU Optronics has plans to launch samples of flexible e-paper in 2010.

Delta Electronics said the company is expecting to come out with area-color e-paper panels for e-book readers in the second quarter of 2010. Prime View International (PVI) announced that it will raise production of 6-inch and 9.7-inch flexible EPDs in the first half of 2010, and of the color EPDs in the second half of 2010.

Since mobility is the main feature of e-book readers, the size of an e-book reader will not exceed 14 inches, according to Prime View International.
