Will nano chips replace silicon?

WASHINGTON, USA: Nano is in, on a global scale. With 'nano' inventions gaining in currency, many an innovation is being rolled out based on the smaller technologies. The latest in line are the organic nano-scale wires that could be pushed up as an alternative to silicon in computer chips.

Nanochemists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Nano-Science Centre, Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen have created nanoscale electric contacts out of organic and inorganic nanowires, a US report sad.

Crossing wires such as Mikado sticks in the contact, and coupling several contacts together in an electric circuit, the nanochemsists have created what could be seen as a step forward in the development of prototype computer electronics on the nano scale. The study has been elaborated in an article published by Advanced Materials.

Computers, mobile phones and a host of other electronic devices currently have as foundation the ever reliable silicon transistors, which in fact are on- and off- contact. Millions of tiny transistors make a computer chip. With the new nano invention all set to take the world by storm, the researchers have said that the material developed by them has a low operational current, high mobility and good stability, the qualities that can enable it to compete with silicon.
