PORTLAND, USA: Sand 9 Incorporated, a venture-funded startup company dedicated to the design of components, based in Boston, Massachusetts, the United States, has said its micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) have, for the first time, matched the performance of its high-end rivals, temperature-compensated quartz crystals.

This achievement, Sand 9 said in a statement, lets the company compete in mainstream markets for GPS navigators, 3G/4G handsets, and WiFi.

Sand 9 has revealed its high-precision MEMS technology after having spent the last two years developing the technology with $10.7 million in seed funding from General Catalyst Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Flybridge Capital Partners.

Sand 9 Incorporated is lead by Pritiraj Mohanty, the company's founder, chief technology officer and inventor of its MEMS technology, as well as by Matt Crowley, co-founder and vice-president of corporate development.

Pritiraj Mohanty has demonstrated at Boston University, where he is a physicist, novel timing inventions such as nanoscale electro-mechanical system (NEMS), which showed quantum-mechanical motion by jumping between 2 discrete positions without passing through the physical space between them.

According to Matt Crowley, the new MEMS oscillator that Mohanty developed is the world's most precise silicon oscillator. The device can compete with the high-precision quartz-crystal oscillators used by mainstream original equipment manufacturers in WiFi, global positioning systems (GPS), 3G/4G cell phones, and other high-precision applications.

The chips of Sand 9, which are at present being sampled, will be available for volume delivery in 2010.

These chips, Matt Crowley explained, cap the MEMS element with a CMOS application-specific integrated circuit in order to create an integrated two-chip stack. At the same time, the chips are thinner and smaller than their competitors – measuring only .5-by-.1.5-by-.8 millimeters.
