PARIS, FRANCE: STMicroelectronics has unveiled a 3-axis digital gyroscope, based on a single sensing structure, for motion measurement along all 3 orthogonal axes.

According to a statement from STMicroelectronics, the company’s ground-breaking design approach increases considerably the accuracy as well as reliability in motion-controlled consumer applications – resulting in “levels of realism” that are not seen before.

While the 3-axis gyroscope solutions currently available are based on 2 or 3 independent sensing structures (even if mounted on the same silicon substrate), STMicroelectronics claims that its innovative concept of sensing all 3 axes with a single driving mass does away with s any interference between the axes which inherently affects and degrades the output signal.

The novel architecture, in addition, has allowed engineers at STMicroelectronics to house the sensor and the ASIC interface inside a 4x4x1mm package, the company adds.

STMicroelectronics says its L3G4200D digital gyroscope offers a wide set of user-programmable full-scale ranges from 250 degree per second (dps) to 2000 dps, with the low full-scale values for high accuracy of slow-motion sensing and the high range to detect and measure very fast movements and gestures.

Also, the L3G4200D digital gyroscope offers a 16-bit data output, along with additional embedded digital features like configurable low-pass filters and high-pass filters. It has excellent output stability over time and temperature, according to the manufacturer.
