I think TI MSP430 series is a rather good solution for a lot of battery powered applications. Thinking about reduction of enery use, it is a good choice for non battery applications too. Sometimes non battery applications need to have backup battery for memory, realtimeclock etc. At MSP430 I miss a circuit for automatic switch over from normal power to battery power with flag indication and feature of automatic switch off/low state some outputs because: If I use outputs to drive digital transistors and the output is high, it will consume a lot of power from the battery which is not necessary. Of course solution by software is possible but automatic switch over will reduce space in this situation. I think it is a good additional way of marketing to promote MSP430 as powersaving product not only for battery applications since in Australia are only allowed power saving lamps.
