DUBAI, UAE: Dirk Meyer, chief executive officer of the global chip-manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), has said that he sees potential in designing chips in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the lines of the chip-design centers in countries with rising economies like India and China.
Meyer told Emirates Business that AMD has chip-design centers around the world, and that the capabilities of Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority present “interesting future opportunities.”
Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) is an integrated technology park meant for the microelectronics and semiconductor industries.
Dirk Meyer stressed that AMD will certainly design chips in the United Arab Emirates, but did not specify a time-frame for that.
Advanced Micro Devices, Dirk Meyer added, will continue its efforts to build a fabrication plant in Abu Dhabi.
Dubai Circuit Design, which is 100 per cent owned by Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority and specialist in chip-design, has been designing chips for the following global leaders in the field: Atmel Corporation, the company specializing in the designing and making of microcontrollers for the electronics industry; Synopsis, the supplier of electronic design automation to the electronics market worldwide; and Movidius, a fabless semiconductor firm specializing in mobile social-networking.
