picoChip unveils femtocell solutions roadmap

CAMBRIDGE, UK: picoChip, the fabless semiconductor company based in Bath, England, has announced its roadmap, which includes complete femtocell solutions, integrating PHY, stack and femtocell system software in an end-to-end femtocell reference solution.

The picoChip solution – through extending its partnership with Continuous Computing, headquartered in San Diego, California – integrates optimized versions of Continuous Computing’s Trillium protocol stacks with picoChip’s field-proven, system-on-chip products as well as sophisticated femtocell management software. An EETimes report quoted picoChip as saying that architecture extends from HSPA through to LTE.

The company says it is planning to enhance mobile coverage “dramatically” within buildings using its next generation of picoXcell chips, and is aiming compliance with 3GPP Release.8, in 2010.

Now, while some companies develop the femtocell software code themselves, some others buy a complete solution. picoChip says it will enable a single pre-integrated and optimized system, which will include all the software modules for the complex control functionality that femtocells require.

This reference solution, according to picoChip, will address all the main problems that manufacturers experience while developing femtocells – like, for example, security, timing and provisioning, and interference management.

The other features of picoChip’s complete solution include network self-organization and automated interference management.

By building on its network-monitor products, picoChip says it will make it easier for customers to make self-organizing network (SON) capabilities within their femtocells.

The company also plans to integrate TR 196-compliant and TR 069-compliant operations and maintenance (O&M) modules to allow remote diagnostics, system parameters control, and troubleshooting.
