TSMC pumps in more for equipment buy

TAIPEI: Taiwan based Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has made as many as 13 equipment purchases during the week of August 24-28.

The company has said in filings with the Taiwan Stock Exchange that it has effected 13 purchases worth a total transaction close to NT$11.76 billion (US$357.6 million).

Among the purchases made, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has said it has spent NT$2.44 billion on equipment from ASML, NT$2.29 billion from KLA-Tencor, NT$1.98 billion from Applied Materials and NT$1.78 billion from Tokyo Electron. Besides these, it has also made five other separate purchases from Dainippon Screen Manufacturing, Hitachi High-Tech, Hitachi Kokusai, Lam Research and Nova Measuring, a Digitimes news story said.

The latest 13 equipment purchases have, in the meanwhile, taken TSMC’s total purchases so far in the third quarter of 2009 to as many as 43, and has been reported as worth around NT$42.54 billion.

The company, in fact, had budgeted close to US$2.3 billion for 2009, compared to US$1.9 billion allocated in 2008. As per the Taiwanese major’s latest quarterly financial report, it has seen its consolidated capex for second-quarter 2009 touching the US$224-million mark. This is significant owing to the fact I is arise of almost 35 per cent from US$166 million in the prior quarter, but down 69 per cent from US$728 million a year ago, said the report.
