TAIPEI: John Hsuan, who has been selected to set up Taiwan Innovative Memory Company (TIMC), has repeated that the terms of licensing agreed upon with its technology partner Elpida Memory, based in Japan, stays unchanged.

The pact allows TIMC to use the permanently patented IP of Elpida Memory without additional charges after having bought a 10 per cent stake in the memory-chip firm.

John Hsuan said the existence of TIMC depends solely on the government’s determination to overhaul the DRAM industry.

He wondered why there is so much ado about TIMC accessing the technology of Elpida Memory.

There have been speculations in some quarters that it might be tough for TIMC to gain access to the technology of Elpida Memory. Some others have even questioned the advisability of the government of Taiwan attempting to overhaul the country’s DRAM industry by backing TIMC.

According to John Hsuan, the absence of homegrown IP assets has been the basic hurdle in the way of the DRAM industry in Taiwan. The founding of TIMC, he asserted, has been intended to address this very problem.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan has confirmed that it has received two applications requesting funding in accordance with the government’s scheme to rescue the country’s DRAM industry.
