Spansion’s 300-mm NOR flash-memory fab on sale

AUSTIN, USA: The 300-mm fab of Spansion Inc, the supplier NOR flash, based in Sunnyvale, California, the United States, is now on sale.

This was revealed by sources at the ISMI Symposium here, but officials of the company have not yet commented on the status of the fab, which has been named SP1.

However, a statement from Spansion said that SP1 is an asset of Spansion Japan Limited, the Japanese subsidiary of Spansion.

It was in 2007 that Spansion started limited production of the 300-mm NOR flash-memory fab. The fab, costing $1.2 billion, is located in Aizuwakamatsu in Japan.

The going then got tough for Spansion, and earlier in 2009, Spansion Japan Limited sought, under the Corporate Reorganisation Law of Japan, protection from its creditors as a part of the company’s efforts at restructuring. In March 2009, Spansion Japan filed a petition for reorganisation under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.

The company had recently furnished an update on its continuing restructuring attempts which are aimed at coming out of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by the fourth quarter of 2009.

OEMs of set-top box in Asia are using Spansion’s MirrorBit SPI Multi-I/O Flash memory, the company said in a separate statement.

Spansion’s MirrorBit Multi-I/O SPI family includes 32-Mbit, 64-Mbit and 128-Mbit devices.
