SEMI Europe wants better sops for industry

MUNICH, GERMANY: SEMI Europe, the body of chip equipment vendors, has placed before the European Commission its demands more specifically with a view to improving business conditions.

The demands of SEMI Europe include incentives for its customers in Europe comparable to those in the United States and Asia.

In a document that submitted to the European Commission on November 2, 2009, SEMI Europe said that state aid given to the semiconductor industry in Europe is “essential, but not enough.”

SEMI Europe has demanded subsidies not only for R&D but also for the whole semiconductor value chain.

As long as the Americas region and the Asia region continue to provide substantial subsidies and incentives for the semiconductor-making sector, Europe also should provide comparable incentives, SEMI Europe told the European Commission.

SEMI Europe wants the European Commission to not only monitor subsidies and “similar trade distortions” by third-countries but also take stern action against those who violate the rules.

In the document, the organization of Europe’s chip equipment vendors demanded “different structures” in the funding various schemes in Europe.

The existing rules, according to SEMI Europe, can bring about “undesired” situations. For example, the organization says, the current rules make it is possible for IMEC, the research center based in Belgian, to cooperate with Asia-based companies like Samsung or Panasonic even while not cooperating Europe-based companies. To rectify this, SEMI Europe suggests that cross-border funding be legalized – a step that would act as “the most adequate tool” in making private investment far more attractive.
