Sources from Infineon said, according to EE Times, that Intel's acquisition of the Infineon wireless business would be for approximately $1.4 billion. It was also indicated that supporting organic growth through expanding manufacturing capacity is a priority for the company.
The sources pointed out that only the wireless business unit was heavily dependent on foundries to get its chips made. The remaining parts of Infineon – which are operating in the automotive, industrial and security sectors – are mostly based on manufacturing within Infineon factories. Therefore reinvesting in these would ensure expansion and growth.
Infineon will reportedly be upgrading to 300-mm wafer production for its manufacturing processes on top of the capacity expansion, since this will translate to an increase in productivity. The sources said that the company is looking to expand their manufacturing in Asia in the next three years to aid their growth.
