BANGALORE, INDIA: Silicon products supplier ON Semiconductor has introduced the NCP5680 supercapacitor-based LED flash driver for photo flash and video light in ultra-slim camera phones and compact digital cameras.

The new super capacitor delivers up to 10 amperes and complements the lithium-ion battery by supplying current of up to 10A for flash lighting optimized for use with the BriteFlash Power Architecture developed by CAP-XXm said CBRonline.

The NCP5680 comes with multiple built-in protection mechanisms, including flash time out, temperature detection, overload protection and short circuit protection.

The device is claimed to protect the flash circuitry from any faulty conditions of the driving circuit. The NCP5680 comes in 3.5mm x 3.5mm x 0.55mm µQFN-24 package, and has been priced at $1.10 per unit in 3,000 unit quantities.

Pointing out that the integrated driver in NCP5680 will power other current circuits in portable systems, such as audio amplifiers, extending the battery operating time, it said that the device can also manage the supercapacitor to handle other peak-power needs for zoom, auto-focus, audio, video, wireless transmissions, GPS readings and RF amplification. The supercapaictor comes with programmable control of charging and discharging and overload protection that in turn ensure that required amount of light is provided for photography. The report added that the I2C registers in the NCP5680 enable users to adjust the output current and flash duration of each of the two LEDs in real time. This system performs different lighting effects, such as indicator light, pre-flash and power flashlight for photography, and torchlight for video recording
