Intel to intro new SSDs in two weeks

BANGALORE, INDIA: In two weeks' time, Intel is expected to roll out new solid state drives (SSDs) based on the firm's 34nm NAND chips within just a couple of weeks.

Though SSDs have been around for a while, their high costs, limited capacities and reliability factors have ensured the drives have remained somewhat niche. With Intel's plans now on stream, such a scene is expected to change.

It had been earlier believed that new 34nm flash memory drives were to debut during the fourth quarter, but this has been preponed.

According to a report, Intel is said to be really optimistic about SSD prospects in 2010, especially considering the smaller and cheaper process node along with SSD specific optimizations built into Windows 7.

It is being believed that the new 34nm NAND SSDs could give user higher performance, higher capacities, and most importantly, lower prices. Intel's line could include 34nm offerings such as 320GB drive, plus 160GB and 80GB capacities.

More could be in the pipeline. Intel might bring in drives big enough to replace the HDDs in most laptops.

It is being expected that these new drives, which would debut in another two weeks' time, could b a catalyst for prices to fall even lower.
