TAIPEI, TAIWAN: Last year, sales of numerous globally-branded DRAMs declined by 9.8 percent at US$30.8bn, as the DRAM ASP fell 55 percent YoY. Most DRAM makers encountered huge loss due to cash flow problems.
Hence, the DRAM industry generally has reduced capital expenditure and delayed their schedules for new plant constructions or new equipment installations. Many in the industry would agree that 2007 was indeed one difficult year for the memory industry to forget!

On the other hand, most of the upstream NAND Flash manufacturers have plans for launching SSD products between 2008 and 2009 to retain their existing market share in the PC storage market. Active SSD product investors, such as SanDisk, Intel and Toshiba, have already engaged in their development and manufacturing. ASUS has benefited from launching its ultra-portable SSD laptop - Eee PC. As for Apple and Lenovo, they have already released their SSD laptops.

It is worth noting that the price drop in NAND Flash has positively contributed to the favorability of SSD and its market potential. Some of the storage server builders are about to establish the high-end SSD-based server. Furthermore, Seagate and Hitachi, two global leading HDD suppliers, will bring heaps of variables to the industry by entering the SSD market.

With all these signs, the landscape of this industry changed. The million-dollar question here is not about the changes but whether one can keep up.
