Chinas SMIC tops in wafer foundry patents

BEIJING, CHINA: The China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) has stated that the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), based out of the communist nation has become the top recipient of wafer foundry patents approved by the China authorities in 2008.

SMIC obtained 621 foundry patents in the region during 2008, compared to 152 during 2007, according to the data released by CSIA. Meanwhile, rival company Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) ranked seventh.

The ranking comes in the wake of more and more China-based firms recognizing patent portfolios as part of their sustainable business approaches. The data has also revealed that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company saw its patent applications in China reduce from 173 to 174.

It has been pointed out that the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation also applied for 55 IC packaging and testing technology patents in 2008. This in fact is a clear spurt from the 11 applications it had filed in 2007.

Meanwhile, two other Taiwan-based companies - Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and ChipMOS Technologies continued to enhance their patent portfolios in China last year, it has been stated.

However, the increases in their number of patents were less significant than Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation's.

The CSIA data also revealed that in the IC design segment, China-based ZTE and Huawei Technologies were granted 998 and 432 patents in 2008, respectively. This is against the 354 and 288 granted in 2007.
