SANTA CLARA, USA: Santa Clara-based Intel held 80.6 percent of the microprocessor market in the second quarter versus 11.5 percent for AMD, according to market research firm iSuppli. This is the highest market share in the last four years. Intel had 79.2 per cent of the market share during the same period last year. "Intel benefitted as the global PC market took a first small step toward recovery in the second quarter, with global shipments rising by 1 percent from the first quarter," said Matthew Wilkins iSuppli's principal analyst of compute platforms research. However, the company's PC shipments were down year over year.
Meanwhile, Intel claimed in court documents that European Union regulators made serious mistakes in levying a record euro1.06 billion ($1.45 billion) fine for monopoly abuse last May.
In a legal plea published in the European Union's Official Journal, the U.S. computer chip maker is asking an EU court to overturn the antitrust decision or reduce the "manifestly disproportionate" fine, said an AP report.
