Bright days for high-end microprocessor cards

LONDON, UK: Eurosmart, the Brussels-based international non-profit association that represents the smart-security industry for multi-sector applications, has predicted that the sale of high-end microprocessor cards will go up by about 10 per cent in 2010.

In a report, Eurosmart said that the focus on security continues to be a top priority, with 4.4 billion units of smart-secure devices having been shipped in 2009 – which represents a 5.1 per cent growth from the figure in 2008.

Eurosmart says it expects the shipments of smart-secure devices to grow further – by 9.9 per cent in 2010, exceeding 4.8 billion units.

Regarding the telecom sector, the Eurosmart report says that, apart from its successes as a service platform for 2G network and 3G network, the UICC (SIM cards) is now part of the LTE (4G) plans, with early deployments.

The increase in the number of connected devices such as mobile phones, GPS, netbook PCs, as well as the emergence of NFC (contactless) will continue to boost the growth of the telecom sector in volumes and value, according to Eurosmart.

The anticipated changeover to 3G for important markets like China is expected to be very good for the smart-card industry. The machine-to-machine (M2M) communications market has already witnessed gains in 2009 in areas such as automotive diagnostics.

As for the fields of retail sectors and financial services, contactless payment cards are continuing to be used worldwide. This has resulted in making retailers, banks and transport operators to develop co-branded programs.
