SMEs must adopt a comprehensive info security

BANGALORE, INDIA: A major player in the security and storage market, Symantec claims its solutions enable SMEs to optimize their storage costs for storing huge amounts of data, and make intelligent back-up and recovery decisions based on the frequency of use.

In an interview with CIOL, Ajay Goel, managing director – India and SAARC, Symantec, spoke about its SME offerings and business plans

How effective are the existing storage solutions? How do Symantec's SME offerings differ from other solutions?

Ajay: One of the most challenging issues plaguing today's businesses is the rapid growth of corporate data. Data growth is a reality and cannot be ignored, and there is a need to have comprehensive security and storage solutions that address specific challenges of the SME user.

SMEs often face issues related to data storage, expensive and inefficient data management processes, mainly due to the lack of knowledge, guidance and resources that would assist them to go for the most comprehensive solutions.

Data management is a key business-enabler and the biggest trend today is a shift towards storage solutions that offer better utilization, performance and scalability, besides options like remote back-up and disaster recovery.

Our SME strategy focuses on providing an integration of security, storage and systems management solutions to deliver value to SME customers in India. Symantec is the only vendor to offer security and data protection in a single solution.

SMEs are still wary of putting their data on the cloud, as they feel it is not secure. How does Symantec address it?

Ajay: While there is a growing interest in this space, rampant adoption is slower than expected due to security concerns.

Infrastructure security is inherently a cloud-based delivery model; once security software is installed on a client device or gateway, it is continually updated with virus and spam definitions, and other preventive security updates.

At Symantec, these updates are based on knowledge derived from monitoring the threat landscape and heuristics such as reputation-based risk assessments collected, analyzed, and delivered from the cloud to devices all over the world.

Symantec customers already have a choice to decide how much or how little of their email security they want to manage in the cloud as against on-premise. Symantec also plans to offer customers the option to move endpoint security management completely to the cloud as well.

We offer a broad portfolio of SaaS (Software as a Service) and hybrid offerings to enable scalable and secure cloud infrastructure.

Customers can hope for a pragmatic approach to the cloud with unprecedented choice and flexibility to manage their business using online services, onsite software, appliance or hybrid solutions.
