TAIWAN, TAIPEI: With an aim to rope in consumer electronic devices in using its technology, Samsung Electronics has introduced a 45nm low-power CMOS process technology application processor.

The company feels that the current competitive consumer electronics scene needs to upgrade fast and go in for an effective cost reduction if it is to expand. The new series of application processors, christened S5P6440, is the company’s addition to its ARM 11 series.

Built based on an ARM1176 CPU core that runs at either 533MHz or 667MHz clock speed, the Samsung S5P6440 has been designed with the objective ff offering major improvements in CPU performance at low power, high quality graphics capability, and lower system BOM cost. Samsung has said that the CPU core and all on-chip hardware accelerators and peripheral interfaces are connected through a 64-bit AXI bus running at 166MHz. This permits commendable input/output bandwidth for handling the multi-processing requirements in real-life applications.

The Samsung S5P6440 application processor comes with 2D graphics acceleration hardware compliant with the OpenVG application programming interface (API) standard. The company has added that the OpenVG API standard enables advanced graphics functions such as alpha blending for transparency effects, anti-aliasing for sharper graphics, and vector graphics support for scaling without loss of image quality.

The new S5P6440 application processor is said to be able to support all systems including WinCE and Linux. This could prove helpful for OEMs and PND makers to differentiate their products through a rich, easy-to-use, customisable user interface, an industry report added. Further, its is being pointed out that out that CE device manufacturers using S5P6440 can offer exciting new products such as next generation PND to the market.
