BANGALORE, INDIA: Minnesota-based manufacturer of additive fabrication machines, Stratasys Inc. is eying to grab around 70 per cent of the share in the 3D printing market, in a bid to become the market leader the segment. The company has recently launched value brand printer called uPrint, a desktop-sized 3D printer for making testing models from CAD.

At present, it claims to have around 45 per cent of the market share, with a clientele of more than a hundred that includes M&M, Cello, Kangaroo, Tata Motors, IISC (Bangalore), Honeywell, Videocon and many more.

Speaking at the launch of the product, Woody Frost, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Stratasys Inc. said, "Every company spends about 80 per cent of the cost during the prototyping concept phase. This is because the turnaround time between designing and bringing the finished product to the market is so long."

He added that with the new product that costs around $15,000, companies can even have a machine for every 6-7 designers, bringing down the turnaround time substantially leading to more savings.

Apart from the uPrint, Stratasys has a range of 3D printers ranging from $50,000-500,000.

Pradeep Nair, regional director, ASEAN and India, Stratasys Inc. informed that so far the company's business was in high-end models and had largely dealt with large firms and the new product is positioned and priced to yield share from small and medium-size companies as well.

Sharing the break up of various segments, globally, about 24 per cent of the demand comes from consumer products like electronics, another 20 per cent from the auto and motor industry, while aerospace, education and government account for nine, seven and six per cent respectively.

Frost said the proportion is, however, slightly different in India. "Aerospace and automotive would be the leading market, followed by education and consumer products," he said

Last year the company shipped more than 100 units of printers, while with launch of uPrint, it expects to sell around 70-90 pieces of this model by the end of the year, which means just five months.

Stratasys is a $124 million company that generates more than 50 per cent of the revenues from North America, and Asia Pacific region contributes around 20 per cent to the revenues.

Nair said India is a growing market and the company expects that in the coming two-three years, the contribution from this region would grow by more than 25 per cent.

He added, "In the entire ASEAN region, China has been our biggest market so far. But they more focused toward manufacturing, while India's strength is in design, research and development. And this is where our 3D printers will tap maximum demand."

Talking about the USP of the company, Vikas Khanvelkar, managing director of DesignTech Systems, who are the distributors for uPrint said that cost has been one of the biggest hindrance in the market but the affordable pricing and the portability of the product will break the cost barrier.

"This might not be the cheapest product in the market but the only printer that provides 3D molds of ABSplus material at such rates," he said.
