Samsung bets big on touch screen mobiles

CHENNAI, INDIA: Samsung Electronics Co.Ltd the Indian subsidiary of South Korean consumer durable major Samsung, today launched its brand new mobile handset, Corby (Model: S3653), designed to support the highly connected lifestyle of today’s younger mobile users.

The company is betting big on touch-screen mobile phones, targeting a 20 per cent value share in the domestic handset market this year.

While launching the brand new mobile, B.D.Park, Director-Telecom, Samsung India Electronics Pvt Ltd said, “Samsung leads the market globally for full screen touch and recognizes the importance of social networking sites in modern mobile industry. Samsung Corby meets the needs of the highly connected and style-conscious youth audience.”

The Samsung Corby is a full-touch handset that places users at the centre of the social media revolution with full support for a wide range of social networks.

The new mobile compliments the company’s existing touch screen strategy “touch for every lifestyle” by broadening the market and targeting the youth audience.

Samsung said the 2.8-inch full touch screen delivers a quality experience when browsing video content online and its quad band connectivity and support for EDGE networks means that Corby users can stay in touch 24X7 regardless of their location.

The user of Corby can update current status and access friends' updates and live feeds on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter through simple Pop SNS.

The handset also supports various social networking community sites by integrating leading user-generated content sites such as YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and Photobucket and other popular SNS sites including Facebook, MySpace and Friendster directly into the handsets user interface. User can upload photos to these SNS and user-generated content sites through communities solution available on Corby.

The handset also supports One Finger Zoom and Gesture control, a unique feature that is incorporated in most of the company’s premium full touch lineups including Samsung Jet. One Finger Zoom Enables consumers to zoom in and out in one hand. Gesture Control is a feature which enables users to unlock the phone and execute the menu directly by drawing an alphabet on the screen.

Asim Warsi GM-Marketing, Samsung India Electronics Ltd said, “With the launch of Samsung Corby, Samsung now has a portfolio of eleven touch screen models, priced in the range between Rs. 9600 to Rs. 33,990.”

He added: “Currently we contribute around 10 per cent of sales in India and would increase to 20 per cent within a year.”
