BANGALORE, INDIA: The 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the world's worst industrial disaster, is now buzzing the online world with campaigns and petitions against the verdict.
A number of online groups have been formed in social networking sites demanding action against the culprits in the tragedy.
Greenpeace India , the global organization that campaigns for the cause of the environment, has begun an online campaign ‘Stop Another Bhopal’.
The campaign, that asks Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop the proposed Nuclear Liability Bill, has so far 1.8 lakh people signing up for the cause.
“The proposed Bill appeases foreign corporations by allowing them to get away by paying a meagre compensation in case of a nuclear accident in the country. The Bhopal judgment highlights the manner in which an American corporation has been so easily let off after causing the death of over 25,000 people and affecting thousands more,” reads the campaign.
“We cannot let another Bhopal happen! Over 1.8 lakh people have already signed the petition asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop the Bill in its current form. More signatures will add strength to the opposition to this Bill. Can you sign the petition to help add pressure on the PM?,” the campaign says.
